Year 9 World War One Day

5th March 23

On Thursday 2nd March, Year 9 pupils enjoyed a World War One cross-curricular day. The activities allow pupils to discover more about the war outside of their history curriculum, and encourage collaboration and teamwork. Pupils were engaged in activities ranging from cooking Anzac biscuits to debating the morality of war, creating lino-cut poppies to breaking codes, and recreating photographic images to constructing Sopwith Camel aeroplanes. The inter-house football match was a big success and represented the 1914 Christmas Truce, and there was fierce competition in the military drill. As the day coincided this year with World Book Day, pupils ended the day listening to an extract from Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War Horse’. A great day was had by all and the history department would like to thank all the subject departments who participated – the day would not happen without them!
