At Dunottar School, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our Outdoor Education Programme is designed to foster our Warrior Learner traits through a variety of challenging outdoor experiences. It is also a lot of fun!
From high ropes and crate stacking to fire lighting and bushcraft, every activity empowers pupils to embrace their independence, develop leadership skills and conquer their fears. These adventures encourage personal growth, build tenacity and cultivate love and respect for our natural world.
Through these experiences, pupils gain the confidence and determination to face life’s adventures and challenges head-on. Whether conquering a high ropes climb or mastering survival skills, our pupils don’t just learn—they grow.

Outdoor Education is an integral part of our curriculum with pupils in Years 7 and 8 enjoying fortnightly lessons in our dedicated outdoor classroom located in our extensive woodlands onsite at Dunottar School. In these immersive sessions, pupils develop essential bush craft and survival skills—mastering fire lighting, shelter building and ropework, as well as engaging in exciting woodland games.
Our week-long Adventure Camps offer pupils unforgettable experiences both locally and further afield. Previous camps in the stunning Brecon Beacons, Wales, have seen pupils hiking through breathtaking landscapes, exploring deep caves, and navigating rocky streams and cascading waterfalls. Each adventure challenges them to grow, discover and embrace the spirit of a true Warrior Learner.
