Curriculum

At Dunottar, we believe that education should be challenging, inspiring and, above all, enjoyable, within a vibrant and nurturing environment. Our academic curriculum is carefully designed to bring out the very best in every individual, while embedding our Warrior Learning characteristics. We recognise that every child learns differently and our expert teachers tailor their approach to meet each student’s needs, interests and aspirations.

Our student-centred approach delivers strong value added, with students consistently achieving at least one grade above their expected benchmark. This success is underpinned by high-quality, innovative teaching and a supportive environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity and independent thinking. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum in Key Stage 3, combining a wide range of academic subjects with rich co‑curricular opportunities. From STEM to the arts, students are encouraged to explore new interests, think independently, ask questions and challenge themselves.

At GCSE, all Dunottar students study the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and the Sciences, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, alongside four optional subjects. Students are encouraged to keep their choices broad by selecting at least one foreign language, one humanities subject and one creative subject, helping to keep future pathways open.

Small class sizes, strong relationships and engaging lessons make learning at Dunottar dynamic and enjoyable. We want our students to take genuine pleasure in learning. Our tailored approach ensures progress for all, stretching and challenging the most academically ambitious while providing carefully targeted support to help every student fulfil their potential. Digital tools, including the use of iPads, enhance collaboration and promote independence in learning.

The Learning Support Department provides targeted intervention for those who require provision beyond the high-quality adaptive teaching in the classroom. We offer a range of opportunities for students to access additional holistic support designed to build independence, strengthen resilience, develop positive academic habits and promote wellbeing both in and beyond the classroom.

Whatever their starting point, our students leave Dunottar as confident, capable learners, ready to thrive in the next stage of their lives.
