Chemistry

Chemistry is everywhere in the world around you! It’s in the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the water you drink, medicines, air, everything!

Chemistry helps you to understand the world we live in and it is our aim to link aspects of the curriculum to the real world scenarios in which they occur. From the beginning of your Chemistry studies we will help you to develop an enquiring mind, asking why something happens, how do these substances interact, what happens if I do this?

At Dunottar, we fundamentally believe Chemistry is fun! Chemistry experiments don’t just go boom. They can glow in the dark, change colours, produces bubbles and change states. Through engaging discussions, exciting demonstrations and hands on practical activities you will develop the knowledge and skills to understand the Chemistry occurring around you and by understanding how this works you’ll be able to separate reasonable expectations from pure fiction.

Clubs and Competitions

Independent scientific projects allow pupils with a keen interest in Science to discover the answers to questions that have plagued their thoughts and dreams.  At Dunottar, we run the CREST award, which is designed to allow pupils to carry out a research project into a specific question with the support of a member of staff.

Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in Chemistry competitions, competing against others either locally or nationally, using their skills and knowledge to complete a series of unknown tasks.

Developing Skills

Whilst subject knowledge is vital for the understanding of Chemistry, becoming a proficient scientist is also an excellent skill to develop.  Chemistry practicals require dexterity, sequencing of steps, detailed observations and safe handling of chemicals and equipment.  These skills are transferable to many aspects of life and at Dunottar we pride ourselves in providing pupils with an extensive range of practical activities.

Every aspect of the world today even politics and international relations, is affected by chemistry. – Linus Pauling
