World War 2 Cross Curricular Day

27th January 26

Year 9 students recently enjoyed the opportunity of participating in a World War 2 themed cross curricular day. Organised by the history department, the day involved students engaging with different aspects of the Second World War in sessions run by different subject departments. Some of the activities were making and flying model aeroplanes in Design Technology, completing charcoal and chalk drawings in art based on work by John Virtue, some creative cooking based on rationing in Food and Nutrition, a lesson in espionage with the history department, different experiences of war in English and designing propaganda posters in French and Spanish.

The science department had all the students creating Anderson shelters and tested their designs against attack from the sky in the form of golf balls whilst the maths department had all the students involved in a decoding treasure hunt around the school site. The final part of the day saw the inter-house drill competition where after a brief lesson in military drill, the houses had to perform their own series of drill manoeuvres. This active and engaging learning throughout the day enabled the pupils to learn more about different aspects of the Second World War whilst also giving them the opportunity to develop their Warrior Leaner characteristics.
