Gold Duke of Edinburgh

10th April 25

Over the Easter break, a group of Year 12 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Swapping hiking boots for paddles, they took to the water for their practice expedition—this year by canoe—along the scenic stretches of the River Thames, starting from the charming town of Lechlade-on-Thames.

This change in mode of travel offered a fresh challenge and a new perspective on expedition life. Students spent four days navigating the river, learning essential canoeing skills including paddling techniques, safety manoeuvres, and how to read and respect the water.

Blessed with mostly bright sunshine and the occasional headwind, the group demonstrated resilience, teamwork and high spirits throughout. Whether gliding through calm waters or pushing against the breeze, they supported one another and worked seamlessly in their pairs.

The trip was a resounding success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Pupils are now eagerly looking ahead to their assessed expedition, which will take place on the River Wye in Wales this July. We are incredibly proud of their progress and cannot wait to see them take on the next stage of their journey.
