Taster Morning

Once your child is registered with us they will be invited to attend our Taster Morning where pupils take part in fun activity sessions. This event allows pupils to get a better feel for life at Dunottar, to meet some of our teachers, and get to know other children who are looking to join Dunottar School.

Assessment Days

We understand that Assessment Days can seem daunting to children when considering their secondary school choices. We want to reassure you that our assessments are designed for pupils to learn more about life at Dunottar, as well as enable us to begin to get to know your child and to help us assess their ability to fit into the Dunottar community. We carry out 2 types of assessment.

  • Pupils will take part in our Warrior Learner Assessments. These involve a number of individual and group activities, that allow us to assess their creativity and how they work with other children.  No preparation for these activities is required. All pupils will also have a friendly, informal interview with a member of staff.
  • In addition, pupils will sit Academic Assessments which are tailored the abilities of a Year 6 pupil. Tests are based on the National Curriculum work that the pupils will have been doing in their current school, for which no tutoring is required. Assessments will cover English, Mathematics and an online test covering: Verbal, Non-Verbal and numerical exercises.

Candidates must be able to attend the Warrior Learner and Academic Assessment Day in person. As part of the admissions process, we will also contact your child’s current school to request a confidential reference.

Step Into a New World at Dunottar

Watch our latest video to find out what life is really like at Dunottar!

After every workshop/open day/ taster session and even assessment day my son has come away happy and buzzing about what was on offer. Ultimately, this is the reason that we have chosen Dunottar for our son because we believe that he will be happy and excited to engage in everything Dunottar has to offer him. We believe it is a school where his talents will be nurtured and we hope he will continue to thrive. He is thrilled to be joining Year 7 and already can’t wait to start!

The ethos of the school really shines through the admissions process. The fact that the process is split into different days, the children get so many opportunities to come to the school and meet the staff, etc. They came away from each experience really enthusiastic about the school as each assessment was made non-stressful and enjoyable.

We just wanted to say thank you so much for organising the Warrior Learner assessment day so efficiently.  Our son loved his morning. He was nervous before we arrived but your whole team do such a fabulous job making them all feel at ease that he said he had really enjoyed it.

Thank you for providing such a welcoming, reassuring atmosphere. You clearly put all the children at ease which enabled them to do their best.

We wanted to thank everyone at Dunottar, who was involved with the Warrior Learning last Saturday. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her morning and came home buzzing with excitement! The warm, nurturing and fun element definitely shone through and she came home inspired, hugely motivated and with new friends! Assessment days can be so daunting for children, thank you for making this experience such a smooth one.

My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her morning on Saturday and all the activities she participated in. Having been nervous that she didn’t know anyone, she came back having made new friends, which was fantastic.

I wanted to write to you to say how much my son enjoyed his Warrior Learning Assessment.  He was alive and full of ideas on the way home, such a wonderful way to conduct an assessment day.  Thank you.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful warrior learning day. My daughter has not stopped telling us about the fun activities she took part in, the kind children she met and just what an exciting visit she had to Dunottar.  It is a fantastic reflection of the school’s clear ethos and approach, that the children felt at ease, and came away beaming about the time they’d had, and the interesting conversations and activities.

Thank you all for making my son so happy and comfortable today at the Warrior Learner day. He really enjoyed the afternoon which, considering it was an interview and assessment day, is testament to the kind and calm way that you run the sessions. Thank you so much.

Thank you to all the staff for making this morning such a brilliant experience for my son. He came out absolutely buzzing. You gave him a such warm welcome and he thoroughly enjoyed all elements of the Warrior Learner day. It only served to reinforce our thinking even more that this is our absolute first choice school for him.  Looking forward to seeing you again in November.
