Sport

Our vision is to deliver a dynamic and inclusive sporting programme that inspires every student to develop a lifelong passion for sport, physical activity and teamwork. We aim to foster a culture where participation is valued, enjoyment underpins performance, and the benefits of sport extend well beyond school life.

We encourage all pupils to take pride in representing the school and to aspire to regular involvement in team sport, whether through Saturday fixtures or county and national competitions.

Sport is at the heart of school life, and we are proud of a culture that promotes both excellence and participation. Across our priority sports—netball, rugby, football (for both girls and boys) and cricket (for both girls and boys)—we consistently field multiple teams, including A and B squads in most year groups. As a result, more than 95% of our pupils represent the school in competitive sport.

Netball fixtures and tennis matches are played on site at Dunottar, where we have three floodlit outdoor courts and an additional court within the Sports Hall.

Athletics & Cross Country

During the Summer Term, alongside cricket, Dunottar students have the opportunity to participate in athletics. Pupils in Years 7 to 9 are introduced to a wide range of athletic disciplines through their core PE lessons, where they receive coaching across a variety of track and field events.

In addition, students can attend after-school athletics sessions throughout the Summer Term. These sessions are designed to develop performance in specific events and prepare students for district and county competitions.

In recent years, despite having a smaller pupil roll than many other schools in the district, Dunottar has consistently performed at a high level in both athletics and cross-country. The school regularly produces district and county champions, maintaining a strong presence at the highest levels of competition.

Athletics at Dunottar is led by the Sports Department and supported by staff with valuable experience as county-level athletes, as well as involvement in local athletics clubs. This expertise ensures a progressive, high-quality coaching programme that supports every student in reaching their potential.

In addition to timetabled swimming lessons for pupils in Years 7 and 8, Dunottar offers a comprehensive co-curricular swimming programme, with three sessions available each week. These typically take place after school on Mondays and before school on Wednesdays and Fridays. Swimming at Dunottar is led by Mrs Kirsty Glyn, a Swim England Level 2 Swimming Teacher.

All sessions are open to pupils of all abilities, with an emphasis on enjoyment as the foundation for progress and development. For those wishing to compete, the school enters local district galas and organises friendly fixtures against neighbouring schools. This year, our mixed medley relay team reached the ESSA National Swimming Finals in Birmingham, achieving an outstanding 4th-place finish.

Alongside swimming, Dunottar also offers Water Polo as part of its co-curricular programme during the Summer Term. The club provides pupils with the opportunity to develop their skills in what is, for many, a new and exciting sport.
