Music Scholarships

Music is a key part of life at Dunottar. Music Scholars are our most able musicians and they benefit from the inspiring facilities provided by our £4.5 million state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre, including dedicated music practice rooms and classrooms, along with a 500-seat theatre performance space, equipped with the latest lighting and acoustic technology.

Music Scholars play a central role in the musical life of the school, contributing prominently to productions, concerts, and performances both on campus and within the local community. As ambassadors for Music, they are expected to demonstrate commitment, enthusiasm, and a high standard of musicianship across a wide range of ensembles and events. Supported by expert teaching, Scholars benefit from a rich and varied programme of opportunities, including masterclasses with professional musicians, composition workshops, solo recitals, and informal lunchtime concerts. These experiences are designed to broaden musical understanding, nurture individual interests, and encourage artistic confidence. In addition to their own musical development, Music Scholars take on important leadership responsibilities within the department. They act as role models for younger musicians, offering encouragement, guidance, and practical support in rehearsals and performances. Whether assisting with ensembles, mentoring less experienced players, or helping to lead sectional rehearsals, Scholars develop valuable skills in communication, teamwork, and musical leadership. Through regular mentoring from our peripatetic staff, Scholars refine their technical ability, deepen their musical insight, and cultivate a creative, independent approach to their music-making, preparing them to make a meaningful contribution both within and beyond the school.

Music Scholars are involved in annual Scholars’ events, which are designed to stretch and challenge them, including:

• Scholars’ Composing Weekend – Working with a professional composer to create a group performance which is then showcased at concerts throughout the year.
• Performing Arts and Music Scholars’ Showcase – A chance for the Scholars to perform solo items in a concert setting alongside a wonderful production from the Performing Arts Scholars.
• Concert Trips to London – Visits to top London concert venues with artists such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and world-renowned solo artists.
• Scholars’ Masterclass – A performance and ‘mini lesson’ with an established visiting performer to explore different approaches to performance and interpretation.
• Concert Series – Scholars are expected to perform in the many concerts that are held throughout the year. These concerts provide the perfect opportunity to develop their performance skills and share their musical talents with audiences. 

Music Scholarships are awarded to exceptional musicians in any instrument.
