Today, students at Dunottar School were celebrating some outstanding A-level results, in which 61 per cent of the grades attained were A*to B. This is particularly significant as our students comprise a mixed ability cohort. Historically, Dunottar’s positive value-added scores demonstrate that students studying at Dunottar are likely to achieve better exams results than if they had studied the same course elsewhere. These results confirm the progress that our Sixth Form has taken academically in recent years, significantly at the top end of the academic spectrum.
Headmaster, Mr Mark Tottman said, “I am incredibly proud of our students’ achievements. These results highlight the benefit of Dunottar’s small teaching groups, personalised support and exceptional pastoral care. Due to the pandemic, this year’s A level students have experienced three years of unprecedented disruption to their education. With the dedication and expertise of their teachers, students have demonstrated their resilience, positivity and determination to succeed. I wish them all the best as they move on to exciting new ventures.”
This year’s leavers have achieved places at leading Russell Group universities, studying a range of courses, including Veterinary Science, English, Sport and Exercise, Law, Sociology, Engineering and Computer Science. Our Warrior Learning approach to education is not just about the qualifications and our leavers have excelled across all areas of school life: co-curricular clubs and societies, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, sport, music and drama productions, as charity fundraisers and in leadership roles.
These results continue to secure Dunottar’s place as a first-choice independent school in the area. In recognition of our success, the Independent Schools of the Year Awards has shortlisted Dunottar for ‘Co-Educational Independent School of the Year 2023’. The Good School’s Guide has described Dunottar as, “as small school with a big heart” and a review by Muddy Stilettos as, “a senior school with pastoral care and students support at its core.” Our prestigious ‘Wellbeing Award for Schools’ is testimony to our commitment to prioritising our students’ mental health and emotional wellbeing. Our parents agree. In a recent United Learning survey, parents commented on the quality of the school’s communication, pastoral care and our educational trips.
Head of School, Abi Guest, who gained A*, A* and A grades said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Dunottar. Dunottar’s Sixth Form has not only provided me with the academic skills to meet the demands of university but the self-confidence to take risks and challenge myself. Our Sixth Form
Centre is an inspiring space for Sixth Formers to learn, study and enjoy free time with friends. A highlight of my time at Dunottar was starring as Sandy in ‘Grease the Musical’. As Head of School, I have had the honour to work with the Headmaster and Senior Leadership Team. I am very sad to be leaving but I know I will stay connected through the school’s alumni network.”
