Dunottar Pupils First to Visit ASOS

10th October 22

On Friday 7th October, twenty Dunottar girls visited ASOS‘s headquarters based in Camden Town, London. ASOS is an online clothes and fashion retailer aimed at young adults. Dunottar is the first group of pupils that ASOS has invited to tour their office and learn about how it uses tech to market and sell over 850 brands, its own range of clothing and accessories and ship goods to 196 countries.
ASOS is committed to encouraging more girls into careers in tech and pupils were very fortunate to meet five inspiring women who are passionate about working in tech. Pupils were shown the ASOS website and the features and tasks these women had been working on – from using artificial intelligence and machine learning to power the ‘Recommendations’ button, to redesigning the user interface and adding new features on the bag section of the website.  Some of these women had roles coding part of the web platform in JavaScript, others were managing teams and the product managers linked the business with developers.
Pupils learned about a typical day working in tech and had the opportunity to ask valuable questions. What came across in abundance was how much these women loved their careers. In these roles they are constantly learning, collaborating with colleagues and feel very much part of a close, supportive team. Pupils felt truly motivated by their positive encouragement.
Pupils were fascinated by the light open plan offices with bold graphics, funky lights and wall hanging plants. They saw designers discussing fabrics and sewing sequins, passed racks upon racks of fashion clothing and shoes, watched on a huge screen the live performance of the website in the tech department, peered through doors to see photoshoots in progress and heard about the yoga, gym and massages that were available for employees.  It was a glimpse into a different world!

One Year 10 parent commented, “Our daughter was absolutely buzzing from the trip. She said that the day was one of the best experiences she has ever had. She was most definitely inspired and I think it has certainly given her something to think about. She said that she would love to work at ASOS! She was so lucky to have had the opportunity to be part of it.”
We are very grateful to ASOS for inviting us as the impact of this trip will stay with pupils for a long time.
