On Friday 30th September, poet Ash Dickinson visited Dunottar School to run creative writing poetry workshops with Years 9 and 10.
A full-time poet, Dickinson is a multiple slam champion who has performed in Australia, Canada, USA, Spain, Jordan, the Czech Republic and Germany. He has headlined countless shows and festivals throughout the UK. He is in great demand to run writing workshops in schools, galleries, museums and with writing groups across the country.
Kerry Lewis, Head of English, said: ”The two year groups have been studying how to analyse poetry. This opportunity to attend a creative writing workshop by a published poet was very exciting, as pupils enjoyed experimenting with rhyme, structural features and poetic forms. Ash is a lively, engaging presenter, who inspired our pupils. Under his guidance, they have developed their analytical skills.”
Year 9 pupil Andrew commented: “I liked how creative the workshop was. I also liked learning about poetry, and I enjoyed meeting a famous poet. I learnt that there’s more to poems than is behind the surface. Creating poems is fun and imaginative!”
Dickinson’s debut collection, Slinky Espadrilles was the very first title published by Burning Eye Books. His second major collection, Strange Keys out in 2016. A collection for younger years, Show Cats In Transit, came out in 2019. His latest collection Instructions for Outlaws has recently been published.
