In their last week of term, 147 pupils from Dunottar School spent three days doing activities related to community, charity and culture.

Students embarked upon a range of themed activities. On the community day, the teenagers undertook physical tasks such as clearing different areas the school site, including the school cellar, not cleared for several years. On the culture day, the students enjoyed day trips to London to visit the Baitul Futuh Mosque or the Buddhapadipa Thai Buddhist Temple, and the nearby Horniman Museum & Gardens.

On Tuesday 2nd July, the allocated charity day, the students undertook a challenging 10-mile charity walk in aid of the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity, which provides practical and emotional support for families who have a child with a life-threatening illness.

After walking along sections of the North Downs Way and the Greensand Way, the fundraisers exceeded their target of £1,500 to raise £1,561. This total is the impressive culmination of fundraising activities in aid of the Rainbow Trust, adding to £404 generated from an own-clothes day and cake sale. At £26 per hour, the final total of £1,965 is enough to provide 76 hours of care, enough time to entertain a seriously ill child so that their parents can have a break.

The community, charity and culture activities were spearheaded by Deputy Head Marc Broughton. He commented: “Our aim of the three days was to present the pupils with three different days that would enlighten, challenge and engage them in things they wouldn't normally have been involved with.

“All pupils have really enjoyed the variety of the three days and in the process have learnt a great deal about themselves, other cultures and what they can do if they set their minds to it.”
