Dunottar School receives International School Award

The International School Award is a British Council accreditation scheme that rewards schools with a notable global element in their curriculum. Dunottar has entered the accreditation scheme at Intermediate level.

To qualify for the award, Dunottar’s Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department provided evidence of international curriculum-based activities, which include an exchange trip with a partner school in Angers, France; a World War 1 cross-curricular Day; a range of activities in ‘Languages Week’; cooking galette (a flat round cake of pastry or bread); and, in Year 7, learning about French traditions.

In a letter to Dunottar, the British Council’s International School Award team stated that the school ‘is clearly motivated and committed to develop an international dimension to [its] curriculum and whole-school ethos’.  It added that the activities ‘involve significant numbers of students learning about other countries and aspects of their culture/history/language in a curriculum-based context, thus promoting citizenship and an appreciation of cultural diversity’.

Dunottar’s head of MFL, Sylvie Bartlett-Rawlings, said: “The scheme, which began in 1999, has granted over 1,000 International School Awards. Now that Dunottar has successfully reached the Intermediate level, we aim to work towards the next stage of full accreditation.”
