Our Year 7 assessments are designed for pupils to learn more about life at Dunottar and to enable us to begin to get to know your child and to help us assess their ability to fit into the Dunottar community.
Pupils will take part in our Warrior Learner Assessments, which involve a number of individual and group activities, allowing us to assess their creativity and how they work with other children. No preparation for these activities is required. All pupils will also have a friendly, informal interview with a member of staff.
In addition, pupils will sit academic assessments in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. In English and Mathematics the tests are based on the National Curriculum work that the pupils will have been doing in their current school. No special tutoring is required beyond this and sample papers are not provided.
Please contact our admissions team on 01737 761945 for further information regarding the admission process.

Why are Dunottar’s assessment days earlier this year than in previous years?
Last year the situation with COVID-19 created nationwide challenges and uncertainties around school admissions. By bringing our entrance assessments forward, we have given ourselves some contingency time in case we are required to cancel or postpone our assessment days.
We have also listened to parents who have said that they would prefer the assessments to be completed in the Autumn term this year so that families can travel and relax over the Christmas break without the pressure of returning for an assessment at the end of the Christmas holidays.
Why will the offers be sent out in January?
Our offer date is in line with other local independent senior schools.
Between the assessment dates and our offers being sent, we will give each application careful consideration, including reviewing the assessment outcomes and the school references.
Why is there only a few weeks between the offer of places and the acceptance date?
Dunottar’s acceptance deadline occurs after offers from other local independent schools have been sent out. Our Year 7 entry is over-subscribed and therefore some children will be placed on a waiting list. We want to be as fair as possible to families on our waiting list and try to alleviate what can be an anxious time for them. By shortening the waiting time for these candidates, we will reduce the uncertainty about their chances of joining Dunottar.
What happens after I have accepted a place at Dunottar?
After you have accepted a place you and your child will be welcomed into our friendly Dunottar community. Your child will be invited to an induction day in the summer term when they will meet their Form Tutor, Head of Year, and the rest of their class. At the start of the Autumn term there is an additional induction day and a fun Year 7 activities trip for pupils. At the Year 7 Parents’ Information Evening you will be informed about school life at Dunottar whilst also having the chance to meet other parents in your child’s year group.
