Co-educational independent day school for ages 11 to 18

The two years spent in Sixth Form are two of the most important, interesting and rewarding of any student’s school career.  They give students the opportunity to develop their academic potential to the full, to make firm friendships, to take part in many interesting co-curricular activities and play an important role in the whole school community.

The Sixth Form at Dunottar aims to:

  • Provide opportunities for pupils to fulfil their potential in all areas – academic, creative, sporting and social.

  • Prepare pupils for higher education and employment, encouraging initiative and independence through our Leadership Programme.

We offer 20 different subject options, with most students electing to study three A Levels.

Art, Craft & Design French Photography
Biology Geography Physical Education
Chemistry Government & Politics Physics
Computer Science History Psychology
Drama Mathematics Sociology
Economics with Business Music Spanish
English Literature Philosophy & Ethics

We also offer an Enrichment Programme which allows our students to acquire meaningful and interesting skills alongside their A Levels.  We pride ourselves on preparing students for their public examinations, by virtue of our small class sizes and the individual tutoring and support that they receive; Dunottar has an excellent record of examination successes at A level.

Small Teaching Groups

Studying for A Levels provides students with the opportunity to identify and develop their own interests by concentrating on and studying in-depth the subjects they enjoy. Learning at this level involves greater contribution from the students and small teaching groups allow full participation in lively and interesting discussions about the topics being studied. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own work within a secure framework of support, encouragement and guidance from their subject teachers.

Leadership Programme

Life in the Sixth Form is not just about academic work. Our Sixth Form students act as role models to our younger pupils and ambassadors for the school. As well as developing their own skills and interests, many Sixth Formers gain a great deal from their involvement in organising clubs and activities for other pupils in the school. The Leadership Programme is an initiative aimed at rewarding and celebrating their talents and contribution to the school. Over the course of the year, students collect points for their involvement in a variety of leadership roles and earn incremental rewards, culminating in an end-of-year reward for those that meet the high annual target. Points are awarded to pupils who undertake a variety of leadership initiatives from founding clubs to leading school events, helping to plan assemblies to coaching sports clubs.
