The Creative Arts at Dunottar

Music, Art and Drama all flourish in the vibrant, creative atmosphere at Dunottar.

You will often hear music as soon as you arrive at Dunottar as the Music Department is based in the atmospheric surroundings of the mansion house and this illustrates perfectly the important role music plays in school life. With three choirs, a Senior Orchestra, Chamber and Jazz Ensembles, pupils have many opportunities to sing and play together and to perform to appreciative audiences. Instrumentalists, including percussionists, string players and rock musicians, also enjoy group playing and the Ballroom, which houses one of the school’s two grand pianos, is an ideal setting for recitals. A significant number of pupils elect to learn a musical instrument in school through individual instrumental lessons taught by visits music staff. Music Scholarships are offered to those who show exceptional potential at 11+ and 16+.

Impressive art works adorn the walls of Dunottar and art is an important and popular part of school life.  From Year 7, pupils are encouraged to record observations in sketchbooks to help stimulate imaginative ideas and they are exposed to a variety of materials, techniques and tools.  As their ability develops, we introduce more stretching and abstract concepts such as movement, expression and mood, building firm foundations for the creative challenges of GCSE and A Level Art.

Each year we hold a Private View, celebrating the artistic work of the year, so that the students can share their work to family and friends.  Modern, airy art studios give pupils the space they need to develop ambitious, creative work and the comprehensive resources, which include a kiln, allow pupils to develop their skills with a wide range of media.

Art & Design Scholarships are offered to those who show exceptional potential at 11+ and 16+.

Dramatic productions are always a highlight of the school year. From the lead actors to the backstage crew, staging a production is a true team effort which brings out the best in all involved as everyone pulls together to create something truly memorable. Whether it is the humour of the annual Sixth Form Pantomime, a Shakespearean play or a modern piece of theatre, the variety of performances keeps cast, crew and audience entertained. Performing Arts Scholarships are offered to those with exceptional talent.
