Pupils at a school in Reigate have been eating ant biscuits and pizzas with scorpion topping as part of a national initiative.

This initiative was one of a range of healthy lifestyle activities during Dunottar’s Healthy Eating Week.

The school’s food and nutrition department was inspired by the British Nutrition Foundation, which aims to provide opportunities to learn more about healthy eating, cooking, food provenance and physical activity—along with small daily changes to improve health and wellbeing.

Students at Dunottar School were challenged to try new proteins in a lunchtime tasting session. Members of the food club baked ant biscuits and scorpion pizzas and then invited their peers to sample them.

Henry said: “We had such fun asking people to try the ant biscuits and critter topping pizza. Some people loved them!”

Head of food and nutrition Ruth Macintyre introduced Healthy Eating Week during an assembly. The packed hall of pupils then welcomed guest speaker Gill Perkins from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the only charity wholly dedicated to saving the UK’s bumblebees, who explained the role of bumblebees in producing food.

In a week of exciting activities, pupils tackled eating and keep-fit challenges, which aimed to facilitate long-term healthy lifestyle choices. These included:

  • A healthy eating and healthy lifestyle challenge tracker, encouraging students to try something new.
  • Eating healthy cookies, baked by Saint David's house pupils in a house competition.
  • A challenge to eat fruit instead of biscuits, encouraged by offering the pupils free fruit.
  • A competition to create a healthy lunch.
  • A Year 7 bee-spotting walk around the grounds.
  • A keep-fit session before lessons, attended by the whole school.
  • A sixth form versus staff lunchtime touch rugby game.

Ruth Macintyre said: “It has been great fun to involve the whole school in such a wide range of activities that perhaps will result in healthy long-term changes.”
