This qualification places emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. You will use your creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering your own and others’ needs, wants and values. Studying Product Design will further strengthen your critical thinking and problem-solving skills within an increasingly autonomous learning environment. The course requires you to identify market needs and opportunities for new products, initiate and develop design solutions and make and test working prototypes. You will acquire subject knowledge in design and technology, including how a product can be developed through the stages of prototyping, realisation and commercial manufacture.
The course will be organised around 4 or 5 Design and Make assignments, each designed to focus on specific skills, knowledge and processes, ensuring coverage of the full program of study. You will accumulate the design tools and attitudes that will enable you to tackle the Non Exam Assessment with confidence, independence and creativity – showing off your Design & Technology Capability.
Product Design supports the in-depth learning required for the different routes that you may progress through into possible higher education routes and industry. Creative and technical challenges can crop up in almost any career and the skills you will develop through studying Product Design will enable you to deal with any situation you may encounter. Obviously, there are clear links to engineering, technical and manufacturing careers as well as links to any opportunities directly involved in designing and developing products. However, Design and Technology Capability can be observed in fields as diverse as set design in the theatre to life support systems in deep sea exploration vehicles, from agricultural equipment in developing countries to one-off pieces of jewellery and from high street fashion to technical sports equipment. Product Design is a flexible course that will allow you to develop versatile and valuable skills for a fast changing world that will require creative thinkers, able to analyse needs and propose new and inventive solutions to problems that we don’t know exist yet. Are you ready for the adventure of design?
