Pupils climb K2 to raise Cash for Sport Relief

On the afternoon of Wednesday 28th March, determined lower-school pupils trekked up and down the school’s notoriously steep bottom pitch to cover a combined distance of 8611 metres, the height of K2.

The indomitable pupils smashed their £3,000 fundraising target by more than £1,000, with the JustGiving total currently running at more than £4,200.

The climb was one of an exciting range of challenges designed to raise cash for Sport Relief, which aims to support the disadvantaged in the UK and across the world.

Groups of youngsters also pooled together to:

  • Do a sprint triathlon
  • Row 346 kilometres, the length of the Thames
  • Dance a 2½-hour Zumbathon
  • Walk 108 kilometres, the distance of London to Brighton

In total, everyone’s contribution was well in excess of 408 kilometres, the distance from Earth to the International Space Station.

Head and assistant head of lower school Abi Robertson and Nina Budgeon were inspired by the ethos of Dunottar to raise cash for Sport Relief.

Abi Robertson said: “The initial inspiration for this came from our school slogan Do ut des, as we believe that our pupils are fortunate to be able to enjoy a range of sports each weekIt’s very important to me personally that our pupils learn to give back to society in a positive way. Participating in an event like this can show pupils just what a staggering difference they can make as individuals working together, and this holds a very empowering message for them.

“The students have gained an immense sense of satisfaction from their achievements,” the head of lower school added. “The challenges are physically demanding and require determination, team work and a positive mental attitude—three qualities that we try to instil in our pupils. They are delighted with the amount that they have raised, and justifiably proud of their hard work. It has bonded them together as a section of the school and inspired some of them to plan their own fundraising events in the future.”

Headmaster, Mark Tottman, commented: ““We are grateful to so many families, friends and staff for their generous donations at our JustGiving page to support this cause. The pupils have been an inspiration to all of us.”
