Junior School Curriculum
The Foundation Stage
Girls can enter Nursery from the age of 3 and Reception the term after their 4th birthday. The children are working towards the skills in the Early Learning Goals and their progress is assessed by our experienced staff. When they are ready, they begin more formal learning in Literacy and Numeracy. By the end of Reception the girls are proficient in basic Literacy and Numeracy and have well developed social skills. The curriculum is still quite play based and the children start more formalised work when they are ready.
Key Stage 1
Years 1 + 2 During these two years the children build on their experience and skills, encountering a broad curriculum to support learning. They are encouraged to read a range of texts, write down their ideas and increase their level of understanding of mathematics. They are also specialist taught for some subjects including music, PE & ballet. They are encouraged to become more independent in thought and action.
Key Stage Two
Years 3 – 6 The girls spend time with their form teachers for core subjects but now many more subjects are specialist taught. This helps girls experience a more formal teaching style by working in different rooms around the school. The girls have the chance to use the excellent senior school’s facilities for some subjects. The organisational skills developed at this stage are essential for their smooth transition to senior school. The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, but as the girls are inquisitive and in small classes, the topics can be extended in breadth and depth to meet the needs of all children. Differentiated work and high expectations mean each child is encouraged to reach their own goals.
The girls experience competitive sports and there is a wide extracurricular timetable to allow the girls to explore their areas of interest. By the end of KS2 the girls are confident and articulate.
