Chemistry A Level

Chemistry is often regarded as the “Central Science” and is essential for entry to higher education in medicine and veterinary science, biomedical science, molecular biology and genetics, as well as specialisms in engineering, not to mention the various branches of chemistry, pharmacy and related subjects. Its combination of skills also makes it a highly respected subject for students who want to follow other directions such as Law or Financial qualifications.

At Dunottar we follow the Edexcel AS (8CH01) and A2 (9CH01) specifications for Chemistry because this course offers the best balance of topics – theoretical and applied – as a preparation for university courses or careers requiring chemistry. Edexcel also has the most user-friendly and relatively stress-free coursework requirements. There are two taught units and a coursework component at AS and again at A2.

In common with other A-level subjects, Chemistry can be taken for one year to AS, or for two years to the full A-level. The importance of practical skills increases at A-level and a significant amount of time is spent on experimental work illustrating the concepts and preparing for the practical assessment. Pupils should have at least a grade B in Additional Science to approach A-level with confidence. Like all sciences, chemistry becomes more quantitative at A-level. All necessary methods are taught in context so it is not necessary to take Maths A-level with Chemistry, but students with a secure grounding in Maths and confidence with basic algebra will find this aspect easier.
