Biology A Level (OCR)

Examining Board and syllabus:

  • OCR AS GCE in Biology H021
  • A2 GCE in Biology H421

These specifications develop an interest and enthusiasm for biology which may then lead to further study and careers in biology.

The AS course is both a ‘stand-alone’ qualification and also the first half of the two-year Advanced level course. It is advisable however, that to attempt this course, a minimum of grade B has been achieved at GCSE Additional Science.

The AS GCSE is made up of three mandatory units, of which two are externally assessed written papers and the third is an internally assessed series of practical skills. Topics covered include:-

  • Cells - structure, division and diversity.
  • Exchange surfaces and breathing.
  • Transport in Plants and Animals
  • Biological molecules and enzymes.
  • Diet and Food production.
  • Health and Disease.
  • Biodiversity, Classification and Evolution.

The A2 GCSE is also made up of the three mandatory units and the topics covered include:-

  • Communication via nerves and hormones.
  • Excretion.
  • Photosynthesis.
  • Respiration.
  • Cellular control, Meiosis and Variation.
  • Cloning and Biotechnology
  • Genomes and Gene Technologies.
  • Ecosystems, Populations and Sustainability.
  • Animal and Plant Responses.
  • Animal Behaviour.

There is a certain amount of mathematical understanding required throughout the syllabus but it is not necessary to be studying Maths a A-level.
