Mathematics
Mathematics is important as it develops the skills of logical thinking, problem solving and the ability to assess data. Mathematics links to many other curriculum areas as well as being a vital tool in everyday life.
The Mathematics department aims to allow all girls to feel happy and confident and to ensure all girls are supported and extended so that they are able to work with confidence and understanding in all areas of Mathematics and to reach their full potential.
Girls are entered for national mathematics competitions and there are a number of other enrichment events in and out of school.
KS3
After the first ten weeks of Year 7 all girls are taught in sets according to their ability, enabling teaching to be directed towards the individual needs of pupils. ICT and practical mathematics lessons are used as well as more traditional methods of teaching.
GCSE
Currently we follow the Edexcel GCSE course. The girls are entered at the higher level. Some girls are offered the chance to follow an extra GCSE in Statistics. Weekly tutorial sessions are run on a drop in basis for any girls who require some extra help.
A Level
Mathematics is a popular choice in the sixth form. Mathematics and Further Mathematics are offered at AS and A2 levels. The Edexcel courses are taught. Applied units offered are Decision Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. Again, tutorial help is available each week for girls requiring support.
We are delighted that a number of girls in the past years have chosen to continue to their mathematics studies at degree level.
Maths Club
There is a thriving Mathematics’ Club in years 7 and 8, which offers the chance to explore different areas of Mathematics and is attended by a wide range of girls.
The Junior UKMT mathematics challenge and team challenge are entered.
