Home Economics
Home Economics features throughout the school.
The Junior School access it through Design and Make lessons. A favourite here is the Year 4 cupcake project.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 all the girls have the opportunity to study Home Economics. Lessons are generally of a practical nature with a theory follow-up. As the girls become more confident with their skills, more advanced dishes are made. European dishes are made in Year 8 and vegetarianism is discussed and explored in Year 9.
At the end of Year 9, the girls can continue with Home Economics and study it for GCSE. The course followed is AQA Home Economics – Food and Nutrition. The assessment is split into two, 40% written examination and 60% controlled assessment. Each November we have a very successful trip up to Olympia, London, to Masterchef Live, to watch celebrity chefs in action and to sample our way round the exhibition.
In the Sixth Form the girls cook once a week in preparation for life after Dunottar, culminating in a Ready, Steady, Cook competition.
The Home Economics room is well resourced. There are electric cookers, a dishwasher and ample work surfaces. The school provides aprons and tea towels. Recipes are given well in advance of the practicals. Ingredients and cookery dishes are required from home.
